What to Expect
To ensure a positive and hassle-free experience with us, we have outlined basic information below regarding what to expect before and after your child's pediatric dental surgery at our facility.
Pre-Op | Day of Surgery
Before your child's pediatric surgical dental procedure, it is crucial to adhere to pre-operative instructions provided by our providers.
- This may involve discontinuing certain medications 24 hours prior to surgery and fasting from food and drink for 12 hours.
- On the day of the surgery, refrain from using any lotions, gels, hairsprays, perfumes/colognes, or deodorants.
- Upon arrival at the surgery center, please check in at the front desk and ensure all paperwork and insurance information are complete.
- A pre-operative nurse will review your child's medical records and confirm compliance with pre-operative instructions. Your child will be provided with a patient gown and have an opportunity to empty their bladder.
- The anesthesiologist will discuss the type of anesthesia your child will receive and what to expect during the procedure.
Post-Op | After Surgery
- After your child's pediatric surgical dental procedure, they will have the opportunity to recover at their own pace. A dedicated recovery nurse will continuously monitor them to ensure they are fully awake before discharge.
- It is normal for your child to feel drowsy, dizzy, or nauseous from the anesthesia, typically lasting no more than 24 hours post-surgery.
- Upon discharge, the nurse will provide you with instructions for home care, including keeping the incision clean and managing post-operative pain. You may need to stop by a pharmacy to fill any prescriptions on your way home.
- Please ensure you have arranged for someone to drive your child home after the surgery.
At-Home Recovery
It is crucial to adhere closely to the discharge instructions provided regarding activity, diet, and medications. If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to call for guidance.
In case of experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your provider immediately or seek medical attention at the nearest emergency room:
- Unexpected severe pain, sudden or persistent
- Heavy bleeding
- Fever greater than 101°F
During the follow-up appointment with your provider, you will discuss the next phase of your child's recovery.
